To the great dismay of his constituent base, James E. West turns out to be homosexual. Several men (one of them Rob Galliher, another his brother Brett, and various others), in depositions, have claimed that West molested them while in Spokane's Boy Scout Troop 345, in the 1970s and early 1980s -- allegations that West denies. These incidents would have occurred while West was a sheriff's deputy, with his close friend and fellow deputy David Hahn, who later committed suicide in front of Galliher with a gunshot to the head. More recently, on gay.com, West solicited young men for sexual purposes (with some success), as well as to fill "internship" positions. After this information surfaced -- quite a bombshell in Spokane -- West responded with a public email, "Like King David in the Bible I will be a better mayor now. I will be more focused and more driven to see this city succeed in all areas. My faith in Jesus Christ and the Lord tell me this will be done."
