Executive summary: Frasier

Kelsey Grammer played psychiatrist Frasier Crane, first on the long-running Cheers and then on his own show, Frasier. Until being passed by the cast of The Simpsons, he was tied with Gunsmoke's James Arness and Milburn Stone for playing the same character for the longest consecutive period in prime time, 20 years.

Grammer has led a turbulent life: his parents divorced when he was two, his father was murdered when he was thirteen, and three siblings have met death through unusual circumstances. He grew up in New Jersey and then Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and was raised primarily by his mother and grandfather. After graduating from high school, he spent two years studying drama at Julliard before dropping out to work. He spent three years performing the plays of Shakespeare and Shaw at San Diego's Old Globe Theater, then toured in Broadway-style productions, and reached Broadway for early-1980s productions of Hamlet and Othello. In 1984, he landed the role of smug psychiatrist Frasier Crane on Cheers. It was meant to be a short-run guest part, but became permanent when it was clear he provided a foil for Ted Danson's ex-jock character, and a rival for the affections of barmaid Shelley Long.

As Grammer's professional life was taking off, his personal life faltered. His first wife decided to leave him while she was delivering their daughter Spencer. He had called her from the airport to tell her he was coming in, and she said "Don't bother. I've had all the locks changed". In 1987 Grammer was charged with DUI and possession of cocaine. Following a 1988 conviction for possession of cocaine, he was put on 90 days house arrest, and then served 30 days in jail in 1991 after violating parole conditions. In his autobiography, he claims that his second wife, former stripper Leigh-Anne Cushany, was abusive. After they spoke about divorce, he wrote, she made a failed suicide attempt by overdosing on Tylenol and wine, and miscarried their child as a result.

During the middle of the 1990s he was frequently in the tabloids: he was accused of statutory rape by the parents of his child's underage babysitter, but police found no evidence to support the accusation. After publishing his autobiography, So Far... in 1995, Grammer was sued by a former girlfriend for defamation of character and invasion of privacy. In September of 1996 he flipped his car near his home, and subsequently checked in to the Betty Ford Clinic for thirty days. He has been drug- and alcohol-free since that time, he says.

Grammer sued Internet Entertainment Group when he suspected that his former girlfriend Cerlette Lamme tried to sell a videotape of herself having sex with the actor. IEG is infamous for the Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee sex tape. Grammer sued IEG while under the mistaken impression that it had purchased the tape, but IEG owner Seth Warshavsky said that Grammer dropped the suit "like a red-hot crack pipe" when he realized his error. Reports persist that Grammer bought a tape (which may or may not exist) from a former lover for $1 million. While we don't know if those reports are correct (Lamme in particular claims no tape ever existed), a 2006 interview with Maxim has Grammer urging celebrities not to record any sex tapes. It is entirely possible that Grammer had forgotten exactly which girlfriend recorded what.

Grammer's third wife, former Playboy model Camille Grammer, was advised by her doctors not to get pregnant, due to her irritable bowel syndrome. They have instead had two children via a surrogate. The Grammers have been active in supporting the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, and in speaking about this rarely-discussed disorder.
