Roberto Micheletti AKA Roberto Micheletti Bain Born: 3-Aug-1943 Birthplace: El Progreso, Honduras
Gender: Male Religion: Roman Catholic Race or Ethnicity: Multiracial Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Head of State Party Affiliation: Libertarian Nationality: Honduras Executive summary: President of Honduras, after 2009 coup Roberto Micheletti unsuccessfully sought the Partido Liberal (Liberal Party) Presidential nomination in 2008, then took power after a pre-dawn military coup d'état on 28 June 2009. It is unclear whether he was involved in planning the coup -- he denies it -- but as leader of the National Congress with the Vice Presidency vacant at the time of the coup, Micheletti was next in line to the Presidency. Later the same day he was "elected" to the Presidency by a show of hands in Congress. He has defended the military officials who arrested and evicted President Manuel Zelaya from the country, and been relentless in his criticism of Zelaya since taking power.
In 1963, Micheletti was in the honor guard of President Ramón Villeda Morales when he was toppled by a military coup, after which Micheletti was jailed for 27 days by the new regime. In the 1970s he lived in the United States for several years, and upon returning to Honduras he quickly gained enough political influence to be involved in drafting his nation's new Constitution in 1980. He is of mixed heritage, his father Italian and his mother Honduran.
