Monica AKA Monica Denise Arnold Born: 24-Oct-1980 Birthplace: College Park, GA
Gender: Female Race or Ethnicity: Black Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Singer Nationality: United States Executive summary: Miss Thang Monica (born Monica Arnold) began her life surrounded by gospel music, and by the age of nine was herself touring as a singer in the gospel choir Charles Thompson And The Majestics. By 1993 she had been signed by the Arista-associated label Rowdy Records, who had spotted the young singer performing Whitney Houston's ode to self-love The Greatest Love of All at a talent showcase in Atlanta. Eventually she secured a deal with Arista proper, and the label released her debut album Miss Thang in 1995. Both of its associated singles, Don't Take It Personal and Before You Walk Out Of My Life reached #1 slots in the R&B charts, and the album eventually attained multi-platinum status. The singer was all of 15 at the time.
Extensive touring followed, with Monica juggling her career and completing her education at the same time. For You I Will, a best-selling single from the Space Jam soundtrack, broadened her audience yet further, paving the way for her second record The Boy is Mine in 1998. This sophomore effort included the participation of producer Jermaine Dupri, and featured a title-track duet with fellow one-name teen star Brandy; the single release of the duet climbed to the top position in the mainstream charts, making Monica the youngest performer to have achieved a #1 single.
A five year gap was to follow, during which the singer took time to manage her personal life and re-evaluate the direction of her career -- and, of course, to make a venture into acting. Beginning with just a small part in the 2000 film Boys and Girls, she soon followed up with a small-screen starring role in the MTV-produced movie Love Song. In 2003, her third album After the Storm was completed, with Monica delving more into rap genre and collaborating with high-profile producer/performer Missy Elliott.
