Arab novelist who wrote both in English and Arabic. Recipient of the 1988 Nobel prize for literature, the first Arabic writer to receive this award. He was knifed in 1994 by an Islamic militant, injuring a nerve which inhibited his physical ability to write. One man was hanged for this attack.
