POLITICAL PARTY

The Party of the Democratic Revolution, known by its Spanish initials PRD, is a leftist political party in Mexico.

PRD's genesis in the 1980s was a result of a schism inside the long-time ruling party PRI, or Partido Revolucionario Institucional. The neoliberal economists stayed behind with the hegemonic, corrupt PRI machine, and the left-wing current left to form the political coalition that became PRD.

Widespread voter fraud swept PRI's neoliberal bureaucrat candidate Carlos Salinas to the presidency even after exit polls predicted the triumph of the coalition fronted by future PRD founder Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, who formally registered the new party the following year. PRD was not to break the 70 year old electoral stranglehold of PRI for another decade.

PRD won its first governorships from PRI in the 1990s and has ruled the city-state government of Mexico City, home to 30% of the nation's population, since 1997.
