Citizens United

ORGANIZATION

Conservative activist group founded in 1988, it is the organization responsible for filing an FEC complaint against Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004). In the run-up to the 2008 primary, Citizens United attempted to broadcast a documentary critical of Hillary Clinton, in violation of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance act. The resulting legal challenge produced a narrow Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v Federal Election Commission (2010), which used First Amendment grounds to quash laws restricting corporate electioneering.
