REVIEWS

Review by John Mailer (posted on 21-Feb-2005)

Schindler's List is a brilliant, gritty drama based on true events. It's about enigmatic Oskar Schindler (portrayed by Liam Neeson), a Nazi who saved the lives of over 1,100 Jews during the Holocaust.

When the Holocaust begins, the Jews flock to the factory, where most of them are immediately taken in by Schindler, his assistant Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley), his fiendish henchman, Amon Goeth, (Ralph Fiennes) and many others working in the factory.

But Schindler is not what he seems. He's only taking in the Jews for more money, he is a married man, and does, at a point, have sex with another woman (good shot of his naked behind in the scene, and some breast shots of the woman, too).

The film doesn't always concentrate on the factory, also. Sometimes, the camera goes to other areas, where tough, violent procedures are taking place. An example is the Liquidation of the Ghetto, where a few hundred, maybe thousand Jews, are shot and killed. An interesting metaphor is a little girl in red walking through the streets and being ignored.

As well as gritty, Schindler's List is amusing, sometimes. The director is brilliant. Steven particulary knows the skills of giving the audience satisfactory enjoyment, and camerawork is impressive too. With a great cast, director and plot, Schindler's List is highly recommended to anyone who likes a tough, gritty drama.
