Young orphan Pip befriends Magwitch, an escaped convict. Later, he becomes playmate to Estella, ward of Miss Havisham, an elderly lady who has never recovered from being jilted decades prior. As he nears the age of majority, Pip receives financial support from an unnamed benefactor, presumably Miss Havisham. It is enough income to live as a gentleman, though money does not take well to Pip. Definitive version of Dickens' classic, with nary a false step. Received Oscars for Best Cinematography and Best Set Decoration; nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay.
