Wealthy shipowner Bruce Vail will not countenance the divorce his ex-wife Irene obtained in London, and engineers a scheme to catch her in adultery (conveniently on one of Vail's trans-Atlantic ships) to nullify it. That scheme is interrupted by the headwaiter, Paul Dumond; Irene and Paul fall in love, but this becomes complicated after a man is murdered and Paul believes himself responsible. Rather complex and very romantic story is now dated but still satisfying.
