A Farewell to Arms (14-Dec-1957)

Director: Charles Vidor

Writer: Ben Hecht

From novel: A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway

From a play by: Laurence Stallings

Music by: Mario Nascimbene

Keywords: Romantic Drama, WWI

An American serves as a volunteer ambulance driver in the Italian Army during WWI. He has an affair with a British nurse, but then faces accusations of being a German spy. He and his amour flee the country for Switzerland. Remake of the far superior A Farewell to Arms (1932). Lavish production, but dull. Hemingway was not at all happy with the results here, most particularly with the age of the female lead. Vittorio De Sica received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
