Working-class George Eastman works in his uncle's factory, and dates co-worker Alice Tripp against company policy. After a promotion, he sets his eyes on the wealthy and very attractive Angela Vickers, but by now Alice is pregnant and not happy. Remake of An American Tragedy (1931), which was less than successful at the box office. Won 6 Oscars including Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay and Best Score; received nominations for Best Actor and Actress, and Best Picture. Entered 1991 into the National Film Registry.
