André Moreau sees his friend killed in swordfight with the Marquis de Maynes, but his skills are such that he is no match for the Marquis. Moreau joins an itinerant acting company, incognito as "Scaramouche", sharpening his abilities with the sword. One of the finest swashbucklers ever produced. Sabatini's novel was earlier adapted as Scaramouche (1923).
