Grand Duke Charles, Prince Regent of Carpathia, widower, has a brief romance with American showgirl Elsie Marina while visiting London in 1911. In 18 months the regency will be ended and Charles' son Nicholas will accede to the throne; if Carpathia switches allegiances, the precarious military situation in Europe may become imbalanced and precipitate open warfare.
