Elderly schoolmaster Mr. Chipping reminisces his time at Brookfield School. A fresh face arriving in 1870, he overdisciplines his students and is not well liked, but during vacation in Europe he meets Katherine and Chipping mellows. Generations pass, and as the Great War commences, many students and staff go off to war; he finds new purpose as headmaster. Robert Donat won an Oscar for Best Actor; the film received six additional nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
