Dan McGinty rises in a corrupt political machine from hobo to dirty trickster to become Alderman and then Mayor, and possibly now, Governor. He married his secretary Catherine, originally in a marriage of convenience, but genuinely falls in love with her and her two children. However, Catherine wants his dirty brand of politics reformed but when one is part of a machine, such can be hazardous. Told in flashback. Won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
