REVIEWS Review by Todd Wharton Schaffner (posted on 6-Feb-2008)
I only knew about the existence of Bunny Lake is Missing
in the past couple of years. I find this movie a gem, shot in
London, with Laurence Olivier and Noel Coward in the cast, and
a haunting musical score that underlies a psychological thriller.
Keir Dullea does well as the criminally insane brother of
Carol Lynley, who is the mother of the missing four-year-old
child. Olivier balances the young cast with his portrayal as middle-aged, wise and experienced police detective.
Noel Coward adds excentricity in his part as Carol Lynely's
weird landlord. Also Martita Hunt plays an eccentric old woman.
This support cast compliments the film and underscores the dark
and insanely intense plot.
Some might find Bunny Lake "dated" in that it was filmed
in black and white and way back in 1965. But I think that
Otto Preminger made an effective film the way I wish we could see again in movies today.
