COMPANY

Founded in 1879 by F. W. Woolworth, incorporated in 1911. In addition to its flagship department stores, it opened specialty shops -- AfterThoughts, Kinney Shoe, Northern Reflections, San Francisco Music Box Company, Best of Times, and Foot Locker. In 1997, Woolworth renamed itself Venator, and in 2001, Venator rebranded itself after its most successful subsidiary, Foot Locker.

Not to be confused with the Australian retailer Woolworths Limited, which has never been affiliated with any incarnation of F. W. Woolworth Company.
